KATA AS I SEE IT
My journey in karate continues today through the study of technique, kata, and its practical application. It is a journey that I have shared with my students and my association, and one that continues to inspire and challenge me every day.
When I look back at where I began and compare it with where I am today, I feel incredibly fortunate. Along the way I have met remarkable instructors, students, and friends who have all played a part in shaping not only my understanding of karate but also the person I have become. Their guidance, encouragement, and friendship have been invaluable, and I remain deeply grateful to each of them.
This book is an overview of that journey. It explains why I think about karate, and particularly the application of kata, the way I do, and it sets out my belief that the study of kata is a lifelong endeavour. Far from being a collection of choreographed movements, kata is a living record of martial knowledge that continues to reveal new lessons with every stage of our training.
My own path has taken me from being a young student and competitor travelling around England to training and teaching in many parts of the world. I have had the privilege of serving as a competitor, squad coach, referee, and instructor. Yet throughout every stage of that journey, it has been my search for the practical application of kata as effective real-world self-defence that has driven me forward with unwavering passion.
It is my hope that the students within my association, together with karate practitioners around the world, will train hard, enjoy every moment of their journey, and cherish the friendships they make along the way. Above all, I hope they will help carry this remarkable martial art into the future with a deeper appreciation of its value, its potential, and the rich history from which it came.
I hope that the ideas and experiences shared in these pages encourage you to continue your own journey of discovery, because in karate, learning never truly ends.
